PASTEL PAINTING ON PHOTO-ENCAUSTICS Saturday APRIL 3, 11am - 3pm MST $60
One of my processes is to use pastel colors to boldly paint, softly blend and lightly tint the surface of wax applied over my photo-encaustics. In this hands-on workshop I will guide you to what pastels are the best to use with encaustic wax that will add interest to your photographs. First we will begin with mounting photographs on to the wood panels (cradle boards) using white PVA glue. We will apply a few layers of wax medium to each photo surface before we get started using a variety of oil pastels, pan pastels and pigment powders. These powder like pigments give the artwork a more diffused and transparent dynamic layering with depth development. There will be a demonstration on the best applicators, brushes and tools to use when painting with pastels over encaustic wax. We will use stencils and mask off areas to control where the pigments fall. In this workshop, you will find out which brand and type of pastel to use for the specific effect you are wanting to achieve in your art pieces. Demonstrations will include using the butane torch, mixing powder pigments with molten wax and application procedures. Our next process to explore will be how to apply graphite powder, earth pigments and pan pastels to the surface of our waxed photos. Towards the end of the class, there will be a Q&A session. We will also discuss signing, selling and pricing artwork.
